Alamosa, CO, June 2
Spent most of the day at Great Sand Dunes National Park. The dunes are the tallest in North America. You can climb all over them, but we opted not to do that. We started with a 2 mile hike up to a bluff that overlooked the dunes. Beautiful, and we essentially had it to ourselves. Before we even got to the trail, we saw a western tanager. Spectacular yellow, but of course I didn't manage to get a picture.
Next stop the base of the dunes. You had to (got to?) wade across Medano Creek and then could climb the dunes. It was interesting, but rather crazy with too many screaming kids, so we made it a quick stop.
Tried to go on a walk along the Rio Grande at the Alamosa Wildlife Refuge, but the trail was closed because of endangered nesting Southwestern Willow Flycatchers.
